What do your cell phone, your Prius, your computer and your video games have to do with the deaths of six million people?

The Congo, which is the size of Western Europe, lies in the heart of Africa and is surrounded by nine nations.  Friends of the Congo say as goes the Congo, so does the rest of Africa, “We must work with the Congolese and other Africans to make sure that the Congolese, and NOT external forces, determine the future direction of their country.”

The Congo is vital to the modern technological, military and industrial world.  In addition to copper, diamonds and gold, its resources include 64 to 80% of the worlds coltan and a third of the world’s cobalt:

  • Coltan is in almost every cell phone, in video games, in automobile airbags and in air suspension brakes
  • Tin is vital to the functioning of our computers
  • Cobalt is, according to the Congressional Budget Office, i a strategic mineral for the US’s aerospace and military industries and is in the batteries of your Toyota Prius and other hybrids

Since 1996, an estimated 6 million Congolese have died as a result of wars for its resources.  Between 1885 – 1908, 10 – 15 million Congolese died due to exploitation of the country’s ivory and rubber reserves by Belgium King Leopold II.  In a 2008 report on “Congo:  The Invisible War,” Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!, asked, “How could close to 6 million people die from war and related disease in one country in less than a decade and go virtually unnoticed?”

On the call, Maurice Carney, co-founder and Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo, will discuss the country’s political path, its poverty, and wars and mass sexual violence relating to Congo and its resources.  He will also talk about roles of the United States, other nations, multinational corporations and local leaders in all of this.
