Mustafa Eljaili, a Professor at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in Monterey, California, is originally from Sudan. He is a student of Sudanese thinker Mahmoud Mohamed Taha (1909 – 1985), who was hung in public by Moslem fundamentalists for his pacifist writings. He called for a new vision of Islam and advocate global vision for peace. (See www.alfikra.org). Mahmoud Mohamed Taha wrote over 30 books in Arabic and, together with his students, wrote almost 300 books and pamphlets.  In 1955, shortly before Sudan’s independence from Britain, Mahmoud Mohamed Taha called for a presidential, federal, democratic and socialist Republic.

Mustafa completed his PhD work on Environment and Development at Clark University, Worcester MA in 1988. In that work, Mustafa explored global environment, development, peace, education, theology and interrelationships. He taught at Khartoum University in Sudan from 1998-1999; was an assistant professor at the University of Taiz, Yemen from 1998 – 1999; served as an academic advisor at the embassy of the State of Qatar in Washington, D.C. from 1999 – 2004; and has taught at DLI in Monterey, CA since 2004.   He has published and conducted workshops internationally.

Sudan has undergone many years of civil strife.  Following a referendum in January, Southern Sudan is slated to become an independent state on July 9, 2011.  There are many challenges ahead for the entire region. Mustafa is part of efforts by the Sudanese Society to bring awareness to Americans of torture, rape and other forms of violence by the Sudanese government against its civilians.

Humanity has achieved much in technology and material gain, but is missing much in making peace, cooperation, happiness and love. 

Yet, I believe that is coming.
