Local Youth Awarded Scholarship to National Convention

A diverse group of New Mexico citizens working together to explore ways to support and create sustainable peace gather on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the Mountain View Market in Las Cruces NM. Their citizen lobbying efforts have allowed Las Cruces to join Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Silver City by successfully leading the way for Las Cruces to adopt a city-wide Peace Resolution. They are currently working to secure similar accomplishments at county and state levels in the national effort (HR 808) to establish a US Department of Peace.

On Saturday, December 19 the group awarded scholarships to local youth active in the Student Peace Alliance in order that they might attend the upcoming 2010 Student Peace Alliance National Conference at Southwestern University. Those receiving the scholarships Abbey Carver, 16 of Las Cruces High School and Andra Olney-Larson, 18 of Alma d’ Arte Charter High School. Both young women have demonstrated consistent commitment and citizenship at local and national levels this year; Abbey in her tireless lobbying efforts resulting in the adoption of the Las Cruces Peace Resolution and Andra as the New Mexico youth representative at the Peace Alliance National Convention in Washington DC.

Great site! Thanks Jodee and the New Mexico Peace team for moving the cause forward and connecting us to this site!! For anyone interested, I also made a blog post on here called "Us Against Them" presenting an argument for the DOP and something simple we can all do to move towards non-violence and cooperation. Feel free to share all or part as it works in your efforts to spread the word.

The NM DOP had a great meeting with Virginia Miller yesterday in Santa Fe. She has agreed to introduce a resolution to the mayor and the city council. We believe we will have a resolution by the end of summer. She felt that the mayor would also endorse. Thank You Chris, Patty and Virginia for all the hard work.
Virginia Miller is a state Legislator in New Mexico. She has introduced the Office of Peace bill into the state assembly since 2003. She is just wonderful.
We have agreed to add her office of peace bill into our resolutions in NM.
Patty Duncan is introducing a resolution to the village Council of Peralta tomorrow night. Wish her luck!
