The Veterans Administration (VA) estimates that about 18 veterans commit suicide every day – one veteran suicide every 80 minutes. The Army Times reported that of the 18 daily veteran suicides, about 5 are by those who were receiving VA care. Between 2005 and 2010, one active service member committed suicide every 36 hours.
After serving twenty-two years on active duty with the U.S. Navy and retiring in 1970, Bob Handy co-founded both the California Democratic Party Veterans caucus and Veterans United For Truth, Inc. (VUFT). VUFT was founded in 2005 as an outgrowth of the Veterans Caucus when it was decided that veteran issues had to cross party lines. VUFT is now active across the country and in several foreign nations.
VUFT seeks truth in legislative action, truth in delivery of benefits, truth in justification for war, truth in public discourse, truth in recruiting, truth to the troops, truth to their families and truth to the taxpayer. VUFT is currently in the midst of a federal lawsuit against the VA for lack of adequate and timely care of veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What some Americans do not know is that our soldiers have the highest Traumatic Brain Injury and the highest rate of suicides, which Handy would like to see our nation address.
Please join this call to learn more about Bob Handy and the work of VUFT.
The Mission Statement of Veterans United for Truth is:
“Serve all members of the Armed Forces of the United States, by working toward the goal that they are never sent to war except for the direct defense of the United States, as determined by their elected representatives in Congress and mandated by the Constitution of the United States; that if sent they are fully trained and provisioned with the best possible equipment; then when sent, they are told the true purpose of their mission and what will constitute the satisfactory conclusion of that mission; and during their deployment and upon their return, they and their families receive all the proper benefits a grateful nation can provide.”
