The United Nations International Day of Peace is a global day of cease-ire and non-violence. Peace Day provides an opportunity for people to act in the spirit of peace on a shared date. September 21, 2011 is the 30th Anniversary of the International Day of Peace, and this year's U.N. theme is "Let your voice be heard."
On September 21, Peace Day - Philly 2011 will host free public events from 9am - 9pm, and there will be activities and observances throughout the city at many different program sites. This will be the first citywide observance in Philadelphia, with support from Mayor Michael Nutter and the cooperation of the Philadelphia Schools District to encourage peace and non-violence activities in the schools.
Peace Day - Philly 2011 events will include:
- "Peace Talks" on creative community-building and moving beyond a nuclear/arms world (at Drexel University)
- Video conference on cultural tolerance with 3 groups of University students in Philadelphia and 2 non U.S. groups (at the University of Pennsylvania)
- "Bridges to Peace" music and dialogue program with Intercultural Journeys (at the Ethical Society)
Peace Community event with resource fair, live performance and global video links.
