I'm sorry to say I currently don't have the time to respond to each of the points raised as thoroughly as I'd like to, but I really appreciate the thoughtful comments everyone has left and am so glad to see that the title article in this blog post h…

I was happy to read an article that provides evidence for some of my own thoughts. First I had wondered if indeed less people today are affected by war than in the past. While the article doesn't detail the data supporting the contention that the 3%…

Nicely worded. I agree completely. I do believe there is "fighter" element to human nature as well, an element that finds release in "solving" conflicts in a violent way, but I also believe that this negative energy can be channeled to produce more…

I think so much of the "solution," if that is what you want to call it, is framing the discussion in ways that promote peace...all conflicts have to end, and the point is that for every new context, every new event, every new conflict, there can be…

Pat, The process through which you can start a chapter varies slightly between high school and college campuses. Since we're currently discussing George Mason though, I'll give you the spiel on college campuses: Usually there is some sort of "depar…

Thanks so much for your lengthy and well thought-out comment, Macomb. I'm not particularly educated on the anthropological aspect of the subject, but I find it fascinating nonetheless and really appreciate what you had to say. Whenever I discuss the…

Cool stuff Megan! You may also want to post this info and the new stuff you add under in the Discussion section under "Other Peacebuilding Organizations." It could be a more consistent spot for folks to find this type of stuff. Thanks again for shar…

Pat, As far as I know, George Mason has not registered a chapter with the Student Peace Alliance yet. Do you know anyone who attends the university who may be interested in starting a chapter? If so, you can have them e-mail me - again, at [email protected]

Stories from the Other Side: "Hometown Baghdad"

When I attended the 2007 Student Peace Alliance Conference as a senior in high school, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the creators of the "Hometown Baghdad" webisodes, which document the lives of three young Iraqis during the ongoing "war on terrorism." Watching the lives of these young people unfold, listening to their stories, seeing their own tears and the tears of their families is at once eye-opening and heartbreaking. America has lost a few thousand of its soldiers, but the war is on… Continue

Why is there peace?

Studies show that we, as a race, have become less violent over the centuries. Citizens of developed countries tend to hold a belief to the contrary due to increased media coverage and exposure of violence. Needless to say, we're doing something right, but what is it? Cultural or emotional evolution? Increased life span, leading to an increased value of life? Leave your theories and thoughts in the comments.
