Enjoying Wimbledon women's final and remembering all the GREAT things in competition. If we could see and embrace it as non-dominational, but as it's true origin-striving together for excellence--I think we could all become better, stronger, faster (ok--not bionic people, but I hope you get what I mean) ;). Just like with conflict--if we work nonviolently through it, learn more and get closer by the end!

Thanks, Wendy. I really got into the NING thing last night and couldn't sleep til all the districts were up! I might be turning into a nerd now that technology is more user-friendly!

Hey, Wendy, I need a tutorial to set up the Colorado District groups. How do I get to be the administrator? I love the look of the Maryland site with the list of districts and the map. I plan to copy that format. The phone number I have for you is no longer in service. Could you call me at 303-321-9960 so we can chat. Thanks for your help. I leave for Alaska in about 12 days and want this to be set up before I go. Thanks. Barb

The Messy Path to Independence

I went for a walk this morning. Along the way, I saw an African-American man coming out of his two-story, two-car garage home. We said good morning as we passed, two neighbors just being, well, neighborly.

Anticipating tomorrow’s Fourth of July holiday, it occurred to me that at the time of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence, this simple encounter could have been life-threatening for both of us—I, a single woman walking down the street alone (even in broad… Continue

Do You Have Empathy… for Conservatives?

The below was re-posted from AlterNet.

A lot of us left-of-center types like to think we have more empathy for other people’s pain than those hardhearted conservatives. But do we have any empathy for the pain conservatives are in? If you’re inclined to write a scathing comment just about that, please check out this post… Continue

Ignite Your Outreach with "Ignite!"

“Five minutes, 20 slides. What would you say?”

That’s the invitation of “Ignite,” a global effort that inspires artists, technologists, thinkers, and personalities (in other words, common folks just like you and me) to take the stage and share ideas to “spark new conversations and collaborations across cultures and disciplines.” As the Ignite Global website explains, “In talks that are exactly five minutes long, Ignite presenters share their… Continue

Tea Party People: I Feel Your Pain

Watching the coverage of last week’s Tea Party Convention in Nashville, one thought continued to reverberate in my mind:

I feel your pain.

How familiar the words were: We’re citizens in this country and no one is listening to us; well they’re going to start listening now. This country is headed in the wrong direction and we can no longer stand by. This deficit spending is out of control and has to stop. We can’t allow this madness to be passed on to our children. They’re… Continue

The Exit Strategy We Need at Home by Lorelei Kelly

Lorelei Kelly is director of the New Strategic Security Initiative and a blogger on Huffington Post. She spoke at the 2009 Department of Peace Campaign National Conference in Washington, DC. Below are some excerpts of a recent blog she wrote that is quite interesting and informative and addresses some powerful questions about government structure, roles, budgeting and more. All emphasis is added by me. Go to Huffington Post to… Continue

Profile Information

In which state do you live? (Please provide the full spelling, not the state abbreviation.)
What first attracted you to peace activism?
I was doing a spiritual practice known as "A Year to Live: Living this Year as if it Were Your Last" and realized I was never going to finish all of the lofty goals I had imagined I'd do in my life. I got thinking, what is one thing that if I knew I had helped move it forward even just a little bit it would die knowing I'd given a great gift to the world? Some friends had told me about the Department of Peace Campaign a couple years before, and it just made sense to me. So I got active.
